Want to know more about the extraordinary history of Neal’s Yard and the incredible community and businesses that have grown up in it?

We’re delighted to have republished Nicholas Albery’s 1987 booklet about Neal’s Yard, with a new foreword by Anja Saunders, bringing the story up to date.

Full of photos and first-hand accounts, this is a fascinating tale of a piece of living social history, right in the heart of London’s Covent Garden.

There are two ways to read the book:

  2. It’s curious to see Nicholas’ booklet re-published after all these years, and it brings back a tsunami of memories of the feelings and idealism of the time, the genuine sense of community in the Yard, and thoughts of people who aren’t with us now. I wrote the section of the Bakery as a cooperative, having joined while Clare, Hedley and Trish were still getting things going, and the whole area was still pretty run-down. I wish I’d known about the reunion! Like all things, the place has changed, and is a bit too ‘Covent Garden’ for me now, so I rarely visit, but I’m touched that present day people still find a sense of community in their enterprise.
